Common Questions Before Buying a Laptop or Desktop

Buying a computer is confusing when every product page is full of numbers and marketing terms.
This page answers the questions beginners ask most often—before they spend money and later regret it.

Answers stay practical. They help you match the machine to how you actually use it, not to the highest number on the box.


1. Before You Look at Specs

Q1. What should I decide first before comparing models?

Decide what you will do with it most of the time.

  • Web, documents, video calls, streaming → everyday / office machine
  • Light photo editing, many browser tabs, school work → mid-range machine
  • Games, video editing, 3D, heavy creative work → higher-power machine

Buying “the most powerful one” or “the cheapest one on sale” without a clear use case is the most common reason people regret their purchase.

2. Hardware Specs & Capacity

Q3. Is 512GB storage enough, or do I need 1TB?

512GB is enough for many people. 1TB is safer if you keep a lot of files on the machine.

Rough guide:

  • Windows + common apps often use a large part of a small drive
  • Photos, videos, game installs, and downloads fill space quickly

  • Integrated graphics (built into the processor) handle web, office work, video calls, and streaming well
  • A dedicated graphics card matters more for 3D games, serious video editing, and heavy creative software

Paying for a gaming-style graphics card when you only write documents and browse often means extra weight, heat, and lower battery life with little daily benefit.

Q5. Is 120Hz or 144Hz worth it if I don’t game?

It can feel smoother, but it is not required for office work.

  • 60Hz is the long-time standard and is fine for documents and web
  • 120Hz / 144Hz makes mouse movement and scrolling feel more fluid

If your budget is tight, put money into RAM and storage first. A smoother screen is a comfort upgrade, not a must-have for most non-gaming use.

Q6. Should I pay more for Core i7 / Ryzen 7 instead of i5 / Ryzen 5?

For many people, a recent i5 or Ryzen 5 is enough.

What matters more than the tier name:

  • How new the generation is (a newer mid-tier often beats an older high-tier)
  • Whether you keep many apps open at once (RAM matters a lot here)

Paying extra for i7 / Ryzen 7 helps more when you edit video, run heavy software, or keep the machine for demanding work for several years. For everyday office and study use, the jump is often smaller than the price difference suggests.

Q7. How much RAM do I need?

16GB is a practical starting point for most people in 2026.

If you are not comfortable installing Windows yourself, buy a model with Windows already installed.

  • Pre-installed Windows: Ready to use; license is handled
  • FreeDOS / no OS: Lower price, but you must install Windows and manage the license

The price gap is real, but for beginners the time and risk of a wrong installation often outweigh the savings.

Q13. Why does PD (USB-C) charging matter?

Many slim laptops use a large power brick.
USB-C Power Delivery (PD) lets some models charge with a smaller USB-C charger—sometimes the same type used for a phone.

Benefits:

  • Less weight in the bag
  • One cable for charging in more places

Not every USB-C port supports charging. Check the product page for Power Delivery and the wattage if you rely on this.

Q14. Do I need many USB-A ports, or is USB-C enough?
